![]() ![]() Early the first morning, we took the Kancamagus Highway (rte 112) from Lincoln out to Conway and got out a few times to take very short walks to waterfalls and rivers. The mountains are gorgeous, there are back roads that are quiet and fun to drive, small towns to explore and everything is low key and very accessible. I grew up in Boston and we used to go the White Mountains every summer for a day or so or longer but I hadn't been back in so long and I was a bit worried that after trips to Yellowstone and Grand Teton and a cruise to Alaska, New Hampshire just wouldn't seem that impressive. My daughter, 12, and I traveled for a couple of days in the White Mountains and had a great time. All in all, I got over my preconceived notions and found that it’s a beautiful place and I’ll be back! When we have kids, I would go back and do StoryLand, Santa’s Village, Clark’s Trading Post and the Polar Caves. If we had more time, we would have liked to do the Mt Washington Cog Railway or the Conway Scenic Railroad. ![]() In our two days we did the Mount Washington Auto Road, downtown North Conway, Franconia Notch State Park and the 100 mile driving loop. North Conway is the only town along the way with a real “downtown” and it is a lovely little town with lots of shops and dining options. I would go back and see the Kancamagus Highway in the fall – in the summer it was pretty but I could imagine the amazing fall colors there. We actually drove the entire loop, and I would recommend that as a beautiful ride. We stayed in Glen and spent a day at Franconia Notch State Park – opposite sides of the loop. Nothing in the entire region is more than about 2 hours away from anything else, so you can really stay anywhere along the trail and as long as you don’t mind a little driving access any attractions. The White Mountain Trail is a 100 mile loop that traverses the whole region. I was wrong! We only stayed 2 days, but I would definitely go back and there would be enough to do for a week easily. We aren't "outdoorsy" people, so I thought there would be nothing to do. I was very skeptical when my husband said he wanted to visit the White Mountains. ![]()
